Burn out - The cry of the soul.

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

And one day we wake up to find that nothing makes sense anymore. What we have been striving to build for years doesn’t seem to belong to us anymore. We feel like we are following someone else’s path and our role-playing suffocates us.

We no longer know who we are, where we are going, or what we need. While our batteries run down, we start questioning everything.

As a last call to order, the machine stops. A burn out, a dark night of the soul, a depression?

Many terms to define this existential crisis that arises when we have gone too far in denying who we truly are.

What, however, has pushed us to take this path? What has led us to this point? Like everyone else, we just want to get by, survive, and pay our bills.

We move away from ourselves thinking that these other paths will allow us to meet our needs, to "live better ».

For example, I chose without conviction to do my baccalauréat in economics and social sciences thinking that it would open more doors for me, even though I have always been passionate and gifted in languages and literature.

How many of you have done the same thing during their studies or career?

Giving in to the fear of tomorrow, the fear of judgment, the fear of failure, the fear of no longer being loved, we distance ourselves from ourselves thinking we are doing what is "right" rather than what we want deep down inside.

Fear is natural, it is part of our survival instinct, but it is something we learn. Just as we learn not to touch the fire that burns, we learn through our wounds and beliefs not to take risks, not to trust or listen to ourselves.

We take pride in calling ourselves « realists », we make "responsible" choices, but are we really true to ourselves or are we just afraid?

What do you know that you wish you didn't know today? Maybe you know that your job no longer suits you but you don't admit it because you don't know what to do next. Maybe you know something is wrong with your health but you won't tell your doctor for fear of what they will say?

We can go on like this for years and years until a shock comes along, violently knocks our masks off and confront us with all these signals that we have so cleverly ignored. We then feel the weight in our heart and body of this existence that sounds like a lie; the cry of our soul that pushes us to explore our depths.

Perhaps it is uncomfortable to confront you through this text with what is true for you? Be reassured, discomfort or pain are often propellers to the next stage of our lives if we are willing to let them.

We often forget that we all have access to a sixth sense, the one that always knows what is good and right. We don't have to choose between being successful or being ourselves, but rather redefine our own notion of success.

Reconnecting to this part of ourselves, working with our intuition is not quirky, we just have to learn to make more room for it. As a start, you can for example, reconnect with your body and pay attention to sensations when making decisions.

Ask yourself about the moments of your day that made you happy or those that inspired you. Inspiration never has room for fear.

And finally take action, try out, fail, live!

Note, however, that it is not about saying that we have failed ourselves to this point, but rather an invitation to take some time to question ourselves about our current situation and choose to move forward in a direction that makes us happy.
